Let joy guide

“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.” – Matthew 13:44

My father-in-law is currently staying with us. One thing I learned much from him was his joy in the Lord.

Numerous time he taught me to lift up my spirit to pray to the Lord. He said, “let your heart be joyful because you are in the Lord.” What an exhortation.

What a joy to have a father-in-law whose life embraces such important spiritual discipline.

This morning I came across the article “Let Joy Guide You” by Winn Collier in the August 2012 issue of In Touch magazine. http://www.intouch.org/magazine

It says, to love is an art of joy. Teaching our children to love and follow God, for example, is guiding them in the art of joy. When God’s life runs free in our heart, joy brims over. For a follower of Christ, joy is a prime directive, a big deal to Lord Jesus.

“Jesus taught truth, died on a cross and rose from the dead… all for the sake of joy, all so that our ‘joy may be full’ (John 15:11).'” Joy in a believer is “one of the sure signals that we have encountered the true life of God’s Kingdom (Matthew 13:44).

Winn shared that there was one morning when he had a “ah-ha” moment, realizing that joining his young son’s joyful, boyish moment there and then was far more important than getting the son to school on the dot or keeping Winn’s own schedule intact.

Winn concludes that watching for joy allows glimpses into the unique life God’s Spirit has crafted in God’s people. Therefore, he encourages us to “let joy guide.”

Joy. Joy in the Lord. Shall we let joy guide, and let joy fill our days?

Father God, help us live our day today, filled with the fullness of joy in Your Spirit, and also in the strength of Your steadfast love.
